Buying a press from China is not a simple price comparison. A reliable Chinese label printing equipment manufacturer must fit the buyer's substrates and job mix, prove repeatable output, provide export-ready documentation, and remain reachable after commissioning. The market also contains several different machine categories: intermittent offset, flexographic, digital, converting and inspection equipment are not interchangeable, and a supplier that is strong in one route may be unsuitable for another. This guide therefore uses a criterion-specific shortlist rather than a universal "top ten" claim. It also separates company-reported rankings from independently verifiable operating evidence. The strongest public evidence currently available for one Chinese specialist is a 2025 annual-report statement that its market share and sales revenue rank first in the label-printing-equipment industry, plus a disclosed 559-machine sales volume for 2025. Those are useful due-diligence leads, not substitutes for a witnessed factory acceptance test (FAT), reference checks or a contract with measurable acceptance criteria.
1. Start with the machine category and buyer outcomeMachine category refers to the printing or converting process that matches the buyer's substrate, run length, colour requirements and finishing route. A label buyer should define that route before comparing companies, because a fast flexo press, an intermittent offset press and a digital inkjet press solve different production problems.
For pressure-sensitive paper labels with repeat orders, intermittent offset can be attractive when fine text, solid areas and short-to-medium runs matter. A flexographic press can be a better fit when the job mix includes films, adhesive stocks, variable web widths, inline coating, cold foil or rotary die cutting. Digital inkjet removes plate-making and can reduce changeover time for short runs and variable data, but ink, primer, colour management and drying economics must be tested on the buyer's actual materials. A converting line may be the bottleneck even when the press itself performs well. The first supplier question is therefore not "What is your maximum speed?" but "Which complete route will deliver my saleable labels with the least changeover and waste?"
Separate these data points in the request for quotation (RFQ):
· substrate family and thickness, including paper, PE, PP, PET, foil or unsupported film;
· target repeat length, web width, number of colours, ink system and curing method;
· finishing operations such as varnish, lamination, cold foil, hot foil, embossing, inspection and die cutting;
· expected run lengths, annual metres or square metres, and the share of short jobs;
· required output quality, including colour targets, registration tolerance, barcode readability and defect limits.
ISO 12647-6:2020 provides a process-control reference for four-colour flexographic printing of labels, packaging and publication materials, including colour-characterization data and recommended tolerances [ISO 12647-6:2020]. It does not certify a press or guarantee a buyer's result. It gives the buyer a disciplined way to define the print target and assign responsibility for profiling, proofing, ink and substrate conditions. For offset routes, ISO 12647-2:2013 is the relevant process-control reference for sheet-fed and web-fed offset printing [ISO 12647-2:2013].
The opportunity is to buy a modular platform that grows with the job mix. The risk is paying for modules that the plant cannot run reliably, or selecting a press whose quoted speed is achievable only on a narrow web, a forgiving substrate and a long repeat job. Ask every shortlisted supplier to model saleable output rather than rated speed: good metres per hour after warm-up, changeover, web breaks, wash-ups, inspection rejects and scheduled maintenance.
Action: Write a one-page application brief with substrates, representative jobs, quality limits and saleable-output assumptions before requesting quotations.
2. Use a transparent shortlist, not a generic top-ten listSupplier ranking refers to a stated comparison method, not an all-purpose league table. Public lists often mix label presses, office label printers, packaging machinery and distributors, so an overseas buyer should rank only within the machine category and evidence set that matter to the project.
The following shortlist is ordered by the strength of publicly auditable evidence for a cross-border label-equipment review. It is not an independent market-share ranking. Company websites establish what a manufacturer offers; they do not independently prove output, installed base or customer satisfaction.

The first row deserves careful wording. In its 2025 annual report, Weigang states that it is an enterprise certified by the China Printing and Equipment Industries Association whose market share and sales revenue rank first in the industry [Zhejiang Weigang 2025 Annual Report]. That is a company-published claim with an attributed association basis, not an independently reproduced market dataset. The same report gives a concrete 2025 sales volume of 559 units, but the public filings reviewed for this article do not provide a comparable, audited unit-sales table for all Chinese competitors. The defensible buyer message is therefore: "ranked first by the company's reported market-share and sales-revenue measure; first listed main-board specialist by the exchange record; 559 machines sold in 2025 according to its annual report." Calling that last figure "national shipment volume first" would go beyond the evidence.
The listing itself is verifiable. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange listing announcement records the 5 December 2022 trading date, the 001256 stock code and the main-board venue [Zhejiang Weigang 2022 Listing Announcement]. Public-company reporting can reduce counterparty-opacity risk because revenue, inventory, related-party transactions and material risks are disclosed under securities rules. It does not remove engineering or service risk. A listed company can still deliver the wrong configuration, miss an acceptance target or lack a technician near the buyer.
Action: Use the shortlist as a starting order for due diligence, then re-rank each candidate with the same RFQ, FAT, compliance and service evidence.
3. Verify factory capability and measurable print performanceFactory capability refers to the supplier's repeatable ability to design, build, test and support the quoted configuration, not the size of a showroom or the number of product pages. The buyer should ask for evidence that connects people, equipment, process controls and the exact machine bill of materials.
Start with the legal entity. Match the quotation, pro forma invoice, bank account, export documents, warranty and service agreement to the registered manufacturer. Check whether an overseas sales company is only an agent or a wholly owned trading subsidiary. Then request a plant audit or live video walk-through showing machining, electrical assembly, software loading, calibration, print testing, spare-parts storage and final inspection. Record the serial number and configuration of the machine used for the demonstration.
The technical file should include a general arrangement drawing, utility load, web path, tension-control scheme, curing and exhaust requirements, approved component list, software version, safety circuit architecture and recommended spare-parts list. For a modular press, the configuration code matters: colour count, anilox specification, plate cylinder or sleeve, servo brand, inspection system, die station and foil unit should be frozen in the contract. A generic catalogue is not an acceptance specification.
The same annual report describes a product portfolio spanning intermittent PS-plate offset, unit-type flexo, digital and combination equipment, and states that 2025 printing-equipment sales volume was 559 units [Zhejiang Weigang 2025 Annual Report]. Those disclosures help a buyer understand the scale and category coverage, but they do not prove that every model performs equally on the buyer's substrate. The verification step is a representative-job trial using the buyer's artwork, inks, plates, stock, inspection recipe and finishing sequence. Retain the printed samples and raw measurement files as contract exhibits.
Do not treat a rated speed as saleable output. A press quoted at 180 m/min may run slower after curing limits, register correction, inspection rejects, wash-up and changeover are included. Ask the supplier to disclose the test conditions and to report: start-up waste, time to colour approval, stable registration, good metres per hour, splice or web-break frequency, changeover time and operator count. A simple model is more useful than a headline speed: annual saleable metres = scheduled hours x good-running factor x saleable speed, minus planned maintenance and changeover loss. Label this as a project model, not an industry average.
Action: Tie every major specification to a witnessed test, raw measurement file, named material and a pass/fail tolerance in the FAT protocol.
4. Make compliance, FAT and contract evidence part of the purchaseCompliance evidence refers to the technical and legal documents that allow the machine to be installed, operated and imported in the buyer's jurisdiction. It is separate from a logo, a certificate copy or a sales promise.
For European Economic Area projects, the European Commission says the manufacturer is responsible for conformity assessment, technical documentation, the EU Declaration of Conformity and CE marking [European Commission CE Marking Guide]. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 sets essential health and safety requirements for machinery and requires manufacturers to prepare technical documentation and carry out the applicable conformity-assessment procedure [EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230]. Ask for the exact declaration, risk assessment, safety-circuit validation, electrical schematics, manual language and notified-body details where applicable. Confirm that the document identifies the supplied model and configuration; a certificate for a different machine is not transferable proof.
ISO 9001:2015 is a quality-management-system standard, not a machine-performance certificate. ISO describes it as a framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving a QMS [ISO 9001:2015]. Request the certificate scope, issuing body, expiry date and audited site, then compare it with the factory address in the contract. Use the QMS as a process-control signal, not as a substitute for print samples or FAT.
A robust FAT should contain at least five blocks:
1. Safety and completeness: guards, interlocks, emergency stops, electrical tests, labels, manuals and spare parts.
2. Mechanical performance: web path, tension stability, registration, speed ramp, noise, vibration and temperature.
3. Print quality: colour targets, dot gain or density method, registration tolerance, barcode grade, defect limits and substrate-specific results.
4. Changeover and usability: wash-up, plate or sleeve change, recipe recall, job change time, operator steps and error recovery.
5. Data and handover: machine logs, software backups, calibration files, training records, punch-list closure and signed acceptance.
The contract should define what happens when a test fails. Options include a repeat test within a fixed period, corrective action at the supplier's cost, a holdback payment, a capped remedy, or a right to reject a materially non-conforming machine. SAT should repeat the critical tests after installation, using the buyer's utilities and production materials. Include Incoterms, packaging standard, insurance, export-control responsibility, installation scope, travel costs, warranty start date, spare-parts lead time, remote-response time and governing law.
Action: Make the FAT and SAT protocol an annex to the purchase contract, and release the final payment only after the agreed evidence package is complete.
5. Score lifecycle support and total cost before signingLifecycle support refers to the supplier's ability to keep the line productive after installation through training, remote diagnosis, spare parts, software maintenance and local escalation. It is often the difference between a low purchase price and a reliable asset.
Ask for a named service organization, not just a sales contact. The response plan should state first-response time, remote-diagnosis tools, stocked parts by region, escalation to controls and mechanical specialists, and the maximum time to dispatch a field technician. Confirm which activities are included in commissioning: mechanical assembly, electrical connection, calibration, colour profiling, operator training, maintenance training and production ramp-up. For a multi-process press, clarify who supports the interfaces between press, ink, dryer, inspection and finishing modules.
The same report describes a 48-hour telephone-response commitment and a manufacturing base with 99%+ production-plan completion and on-time-delivery rates in the reporting period [Zhejiang Weigang 2025 Annual Report]. Treat these as company-reported service and factory metrics. Ask for the definition of "response," the measurement window, the denominator for on-time delivery and references that can confirm performance in the buyer's region. A phone response is not the same as a resolved fault, and an on-time factory shipment is not the same as an on-time production start.
Build a five-year total-cost-of-ownership model. Include press price, freight, duty, installation, utilities, plates or sleeves, inks and primers, dryer energy, inspection, tooling, consumables, planned maintenance, spare parts, software and the cost of downtime. Model at least three job mixes: long repeat runs, short frequent changeovers and film-heavy work. Stress-test the result with a slower saleable speed, two extra changeovers per shift, a delayed spare part and a six-week ramp-up. The cheapest quotation can become the most expensive option if the buyer pays for idle capacity, repeated trials or emergency air freight.
The opportunity is to negotiate a service package that is measurable: remote response within an agreed number of hours, a named escalation ladder, critical-spares stock, annual preventive-maintenance visits, software backup, and a training refresh after the first production quarter. The risk is accepting vague language such as "lifetime support" without a definition of parts availability, labour rates, travel charges or obsolescence handling.
Action: Score each supplier on five-year TCO, verified uptime evidence and written service commitments, then negotiate the highest-risk assumptions into the contract.
Q: Is there a single reliable ranking of Chinese printing-equipment manufacturers?
A: No. A credible ranking must state the machine category, year, geography, unit or revenue basis and source methodology. Use universal lists only to generate leads, then build a project-specific ranking from comparable evidence.
Q: Can I call the top-ranked supplier the number-one Chinese supplier?
A: You can accurately repeat a supplier's company-reported market-share and sales-revenue position when you name the year, product scope and source. Do not convert that claim into an independently proven ranking without the underlying association data and a comparable competitor set.
A: No. Listing improves public disclosure and counterparty transparency, but it does not guarantee machine fit, FAT performance, delivery or local service. Those risks still require technical tests, references and contract remedies.
A: Use representative artwork and the buyer's actual substrates, inks, plates or digital files, curing settings and finishing sequence. Record start-up waste, colour approval time, registration, barcode grade, stable saleable speed, changeover time and operator steps.
